For decades, the salt industry was considered as an “orphan industry” leaving it overlooked and under-supported. Now, through the Development of Salt Industry Project – also known as Oplan Asin – BFAR calls on to everyone “Pasiglahin, Sariling Ating Asin!” – a united effort to bring back the strength and pride of our own salt production.

The program formally opened with the welcome remarks given by Hon. Rogelio G. Solis, Barangay Captain – Brgy. Buayan, General Santos City, who expressed his full commitment to support the industry, having been part of the salt-making community himself.

This was followed by Mr. Mufrid N. Ibrahim, PFO South Cotabato, who reaffirmed his support in strengthening the industry. Also, representing the City Mayor of General Santos City, Hon. Doc. Jose Jacinto Dinopol, City Councilor, graced the activity, extending the local government’s full backing for this revitalizing effort.

To start the capacity building, Ms. Laila L. Emperua, DSIP Focal, presented the training overview, setting the tone for the programโ€™s objectives and scope.

The lecture proper then began with Engr. Vanessa Lariosa, DSIP Staff, discussing key topics including the provisions of RA 11985, the Salt Production Tenurial Instrument, and the Salt Producers Registration. Followed by Engr. Keithe Godwin V. Abad, DSIP Staff, discussing Food Safety, GMP, SSOP & Modernized Salt Farming Technologies. To end, Ms. Rhea Mae D. Lopez, PHMSSS Staff, discussed about the overview of the artisanal salt of the Philippines.

This first day of capacity building not only provides training for participants โ€” it also marks the first year of implementation of DSIP in Region XII. With modern methods, steady leadership, and community involvement, the region takes its initial step toward revitalizing the salt industry.
