General Santos City – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), in collaboration with the Socsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII), successfully concluded a four-day training for the officers and crew of commercial tuna handline fishing vessels on July 11 to July 15, 2023. The activity focused on sustainable fisheries management, responsible fishing practices, proper fish handling onboard, catch documentation, and practical navigation.

During the closing ceremony, Omar M. Sabal of BFAR 12 expressed his gratitude, on behalf of Regional Director Usop D. Pendaliday, Jr., to the resource persons, participants, and facilitators for their active participation and dedication to the program. He encouraged all the attendees to apply the knowledge gained during the training to further enhance their fishing practices.

Featured in the ceremony was the distribution of certificates to the participants which were facilitated by officials of BFAR and private sector.

With the completion of the program, the newly-trained participants are now equipped with valuable insights and skills in sustainable fisheries management. They are expected to share their newfound knowledge and experiences with their respective fishing companies, contributing to responsible fishing practices as stewards of our marine resources.

Lots of lessons and good practices were showcased and noted in this training and several others are yet to be documented as we look forward to the next edition of this activity which is scheduled on July 24 to July 28, 2023. The activity hopes to cater to more fishing industry stakeholders who are eager to promote sustainability and responsibility in their handline fishing operations.
